North of Great Barrington on Route 7 is Monument Mountain 5 [map], a craggy peak whose summit is a pleasant half-hour hike from the parking lot at its base. The mountain is a Berkshire literary landmark of considerable repute. The poet William Cullen Bryant sang its praises while practicing as a local attorney in the 1830s.

Epic sculpture

After visiting MASS MoCA, make a pilgrimage to 82 Summer Street and Eric Rudd’s epic sculptural work, A Chapel for Humanity. Inside the 1893 building, last used as a Unitarian Church, 150 stylized human figures are grouped in the nave, positioned to evoke religious and social themes. Visitors follow pathways around and through the groupings, encouraged to reflect on the nature of mankind, relationships, and society.

Rudd started the work in 1991 and completed the body of it over the next decade. He has since added low-relief panels on the ceiling of another 250 figures observing the scene below them. The chapel (tel: 800-689 0978; www.ericrudd.com/rudd_artsites.htm) is open Wednesday to Sunday (noon–5pm) in the summer, weekends (same hours) in the fall.
